Licensing Requirements for a Dart Gun

In most places it is relatively straight forward to own a Dart Gun if you hold a current firearms license – however Legislation differs from State to State so we have compiled a list showing the requirements to own and operate a Dart Gun in all the States of Australia – and in New Zealand.

These requirements are subject to change at any time.

NEW SOUTH WALES

In New South Wales you need to hold a current New South Wales Firearms License and obtain a ‘Permit to Acquire’ from the NSW Police before purchasing a Dart Gun. You also must also complete a Government Recognized Training Course in the Safe Operation of a Dart Gun before you are allowed to purchase the Dart Gun.

In Queensland to own a Dart Gun, you need to hold a current Queensland Firearms License and obtain a ‘Permit to Acquire’ from the QLD Police before purchasing a Dart Gun.

QUEENSLAND

VICTORIA 

To own a Dart Gun in Victoria, you need to hold a current Victorian Firearms License and obtain a ‘Permit to Acquire’ from the VIC Police before purchasing a Dart Gun.

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

To own a Dart Gun in the ACT you would be required to obtain an Animal Welfare Firearms Licence. To do so would require the successful completion of an ACT firearms safety handling course for category A & B firearms. The course can be completed at one of the ACT gun clubs or through some ACT firearms Dealers.

TASMANIA

If you want to own a Dart Gun in Tasmania you need to hold a current Tasmanian Firearms License and obtain a ‘Permit to Acquire’ from the TAS Police before purchasing a Dart Gun.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

In the Northern Territory you need to hold a current firearms license and also complete a course in the safe handling of tranquilizer guns to own a Dart Gun.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

In Western Australia you need to hold a current West Australian Firearms License and obtain a ‘Permit to Acquire’ from the WA Police before purchasing a Dart Gun.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

To own a Dart Gun in South Australia you need to hold a current South Australian Firearms License and obtain a ‘Permit to Acquire’ from the SA Police before purchasing a Dart Gun.

NEW ZEALAND

In NZ you need to hold a current New Zealand Firearms license if you are purchasing a Cartridge Fired Dart Projector, however if you are buying a CO2 or Air Powered Dart Projector no firearms license is required at all!
